In a state that’s known for its pie, Marianne Carlson won first place in the My Pie Basket competition Aug. 18 at the Iowa State Fair.
She received a $20 gift card for her prize-winning pie. Contestants were challenged to create an award worthy two-crust fruit pie.In the Machine Shed Pies competition Aug. 14 Carlson was first overall winner in the cream pie competition and took first and second place overall in fruit pies.
She placed first in the blueberry class, first in the lattice top cherry class, first in the rhubarb-strawberry class, and first in the one crust other than named class.
Entries were judged on quality of crust, filing, originality and general appearance.
Carlson won second place with another sort of pie – a pizza pie – in the Wildest Best Tasting Pizza competition judged Aug. 17. Contestants were asked to make their wildest pizza a reality, with judging based on taste and creativity.
She returned Aug. 18 and received honorable mention in the Gino’s Pizza contest. That contest required a homemade sauce. Entries were judged on taste, ingredients and appearance.
In the My Favorite Meatloaf contest judged Aug. 17 Carlson placed second and received a $75 gift card. Entries were judged based on taste, texture, creativity and appearance.
She placed second and received $300 in the Best Templeton Rye Appetizer competition on Aug. 18. Contestants were asked to create an ward winning appetizer that features Templeton Rye as the main ingredient. Entries were judged on flavor, presentation, and best use of Templeton Rye.
